On December 21, 2023, Maersk announced that the diversion of Maersk's vessels to the Cape of Good Hope to avoid attacks had resulted in increased transportation costs and operational disruptions, which would be increased in the form of a "Transportation Disruption Surcharge (TDS)" and a "Peak Season Surcharge (PSS)".
Maersk said the TDS, effective Dec. 21, 2023, is $200 for 20DRY, $400 for 40DRY(dry containers) and $450 for 40’Reefer.
The PSS is effective January 1, 2024, with the Far East to Europe route costing $500 for small containers and $1000 for large containers. The Far East to the East Coast of North America, The Far East (except Vietnam and Taiwan, China) to North West Africa costs $300 for small container and $600 for large container; all dry and reefer containers from The Far East (except Vietnam and Taiwan, China) to the Middle East costs $750 for small container and $1,500 for large container.
